Log Book for March 3, 2003
Crew Diary
Jennifer Laing Reporting

Today was a slower day for me, with report writing, fixing up photos for the Website and cooking dinner with Nishi.

Creativity had to reign again with the meal - the burners here in the kitchen take SO long to heat things up, while over-using the microwave runs the risk of cutting the power. So it's a delicate balance and you hold your breath a bit that things work out ... My jelly and banana pudding probably (definitely) wouldn't rate with Jamie Oliver or Nigella Lawson but it was edible and livened up with some grated chocolate, was quite enjoyable. It's amazing how you learn to adapt for cooking for big groups, as well as working around food allergies and habits. The meals here that others have cooked have certainly been better than I expected, so that's been a plus!

Jon and Nancy investigated a abandoned prospect of a uranium mine in the area, while Shannon went to Goblin Valley for her own project. The rest were working around the Hab, getting ready for the week ahead, and helping with meals and washing up.

We had a big group meeting after dinner to plan the comparative Rover studies tomorrow that Graham has planned. We start with the 'Ares' - Nancy and Jon will be the scientists and Stan the engineer. In the 'chase vehicle, ' Graham and I will record data and film the proceedings. Steve Jordan is coming along to film the 'data collectors' i.e. Graham and I, while Matt will be our engineer. It should be interesting to see how the crew operates out of the rover, when safety concerns will arise, and how long it takes to get the EVAs complete.

We then have other EVAs on Thursday and Friday when the film crew from the French TV channel will be here, so they have been roughly sketched out, weather permitting. I may get to do an EVA in an analog spacesuit later in the week!

Tonight ends with a DVD of 'The Matrix' in the Everest Rover - our last chance to use it before we go into full Mars simulation, and can't leave the Hab except on EVA.
