This is an image of the canyon system we discovered today at Waypoint 52. Note the stratigraphic column exposed (i.e. the numerous exposed layers). Samples of the sandstone as well as the green and red strata layers were collected.


This is an image of a hardened mud running through a channel. Note the water marks which are preserved in the mud at the bottom of this small channel. Similar ripple marks (seen in rocks at various other Waypoints) are indicative of past fluvial activity.


Here is Heather Schluda taking a sample of the stream water at the bottom of the canyon today. The biology team here at the MDRS is interested in water samples to examine the types of microorganisms living in this liquid environment.


Heather and Andy work to secure the gear to the ATV during EVA activities in preparation to move to another sampling site.
