Calling all
rovers! Registration is now open for the 2012 University Rover Challenge (URC 2012)! The sixth
annual URC, which asks an international field of college students and their
custom-built rovers to tackle a series of Mars-themed challenges, will take place May 31 - June 2, 2012 at the Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS) outside of Hanksville, Utah. The registration window closes at 5:00 p.m. EST on January 31, 2012. Full registration details can be found online. URC 2012 features a lineup of familiar challenges, with a few new twists: - Sample Return Tasks: Investigate the local terrain, select and return a single sample for further analysis, - Astronaut Assistance Task: The popular task to deliver packages to astronauts in the field features a new twist that favors autonomous operations, - Equipment Servicing Task: Service a malfunctioning equipment panel, including cleaning and measuring the output of solar panels.
The 2010 and 2011 podiums have each featured an international trio from the United States, Canada and Poland, with the Polish Magma 2 team taking home the title in 2011. 2012 promises to deliver even more exciting world-wide competition and amazing technology.
