Commanders Summary - August 3, 2005
Judd Reed Reporting
Crew Greenleaf, has completed the tenth rotation at FMARS. The 2005 summer session was extremely productive and rewarding. We did not set out to travel as far as we could. We did not set out to run the maximum number of EVA's. Instead, we strove to achieve as many science objectives as possible while keeping our priorities straight. Our HSO, Tiffany Vora, is a very talented EMT with a spectrum of experiences at mars analog research sites (see mission logs from MDRS crew 11). She spearheaded our efforts to keep safety first with drills, monitoring, and near constant reminders of the numerous hazards we face.
We also strove to elevate the level of creditability of the SIM. For example, we built on the work begun by Commander Held of FMARS crew 9 to cope with differences between Earth's and Mars' electromagnetic environment as well as physical one. We accepted that communications on Mars will be limited to literal line of sight at best. The area accessible to EVA was extended by use of automated as well as manual radio relays. Even on frustrating days this crew managed to do an impressive amount of science.
