FMARS Crew Biographies
Dr. Frank Eckardt

FMARS Crew Portrait Dr. Frank EckardtBorn Germany 1967 and grew up in a number of European countries. Studied Physical Geography and graduated with a PhD from Oxford University as a dryland geomorphologist and applied remote sensing expert. Has worked in African drylands for the past 10 years with focus on the Kalahari and Namib regions. Currently teaching at the University of Botswana.

I was involved in the NASA SAFARI 2000 southern African region atmospheric research project. Main interest in formation of evaporites and the role of salt lakes towards global dust production, dispersal and impact on resources and people. Also gained satellite image validation experiences on Norwegian glacier and barrier reefs in Belize. Main contribution to FMARS is mapping of regional surface geology and morphology from multispectral Landsat ETM imagery with the purpose to create precise GIS maps of the area in and around the Haughton crater. A graduate of the International Space University class of 1997.
