Crew Duties
Crew 57 Mission Info | Crew 57 Biographies

Crew 57 Mission PatchCommander:

The Commander will be responsible for the well being of the crew and for overall mission success. Approaching these duties from the perspective of a facilitator, the Commander will work to ensure that all participants get the most out of the experience, and will liaise with MDRS Mission Support on all issues relating to the success of the rotation and of the overall MDRS project.

Executive Officer:

The Executive Officer will work toward the same ends as the Commander - to ensure the well being of the crew and to facilitate overall mission success. The XO, with the collaboration of the Commander, is also responsible for EVA scheduling and other mission critical activities.

Chief Engineer:

The Chief Engineer will be responsible for ensuring the overall proper functioning of the Hab and all mission-critical systems - most importantly, power, water and transportation. The Chief Engineer will delegate and/or assist the Field Engineers as appropriate, being sensitive to the priorities of the crew as a whole in a constantly changing environment. The Chief Engineer will liaise with MDRS Mission Support on technical issues and file daily engineering reports detailing issues such as water and generator fuel consumption, repairs affected and ongoing technical challenges.

Field Engineer:

The Field Engineer is responsible for supporting researchers with any project-specific hardware and software, and assisting the Chief Engineer as needed. This includes ensuring that all devices are properly charged and working (radios, PDA's, GPS receivers, etc.), all raw EVA data is properly downloaded and archived from field equipment between EVAs, all of the All-Terrain Vehicles are properly maintained and refueled, as well as ensuring that all EVA/space suits are properly maintained and fully charged. It is also highly recommended that the Field Engineer – through consultation MDRS Mission Support, the Chief Engineer and the Commander – identify a particular technical issue to be addressed over the course of the expedition (ie a "pet project") concerning either the GreenHab or Observatory. The Field Engineer must possess a very strong mix of background knowledge and hands-on experience, demonstrating him or herself to be a Jack-of-all-Trades and master of… at least some. The Field Engineer will file daily reports detailing issues related to GreenHab and Hab systems status, repairs, and pet project updates.

Biologist:

The Biologist's duties will primarily involve their own research efforts. This crewmember, through a research proposal, will define a specific research project that is of significant importance to Mars exploration. This crewmember is also responsible for managing data collection, analysis, reporting and identifying the plan/protocols necessary to accomplish the research objectives. The Biologist shall demonstrate he/she posses the skills and knowledge (i.e. lab and field experience) necessary to carryout the proposed research project. The biologist will be expected to submit a final research report, and is encouraged to publish any significant findings.

Geologist:

The Geologist's duties will primarily involve their own research efforts. This crewmember, through a research proposal, will define a specific research project that is of significant importance to Mars exploration. This crewmember is also responsible for managing data collection, analysis, reporting and identifying the plan/protocols necessary to accomplish the research objectives. The Geologist shall demonstrate he/she posses the skills and knowledge (i.e. lab and field experience) necessary to carryout the proposed research project. The geologist will be expected to submit a final research report, and is encouraged to publish any significant findings.

HSO:

The Health and Safety Officer (HSO) is responsible for overseeing crew safety and general wellbeing. The candidate selected for this supplemental role shall demonstrate training in areas such as CPR, first aid, etc., and will take on HSO duties in addition to his/her other duties.
