EVA Report
Joe Sapp & Amy Blank Reporting

Duration: 4:30 - 8:15 (3 hours, 45 minutes)
Participants: Amy Blank and Joe Sapp
EVA Equipment: GPS device, camera, tripod, sample bags

Objectives/Work Done: The objectives of this EVA were to scout out a path to Phobos Peak and to take two samples and a panoramic photograph at the sample site. The purpose of taking the two samples was to become familiar with the procedures for a geological EVA. At the top of Phobos Peak, two samples were taken and the locations were noted in the panoramic photo.

Points of Interest (Coordinates in UTM NAD 27):
  • Approx. location of sample 1: 38 deg 24.082 min N, 110 deg 46.687 min W
  • Approx. location of sample 2: 38 deg 24.082 min N, 110 deg 46.687 min W
  • Approx. location of the tallest point on Phobos Peak: 38 deg 24.092 min N, 110 deg 46.675 min W
Weather: Sunny

Maximum Distance from Hab: 1.25 km

Lessons Learned:
  • Recharge batteries before going on EVA
  • Hydrate before any EVA, especially potentially long ones
  • GPS device critical when returning to the Hab, especially when walking back into the sun; try to plan them so this situation doesn't happen
  • Plan route with maps before EVA, if possible, to maintain the surroundings as they are
