Log Book for May 8, 2006
EVA Report
Jeremy Sotzen Reporting

Duration: 10:20-12:15 (1 hour, 56 minutes)
Participants: Jeremy Sotzen, Phil Larson, Mike Fenton
EVA Equipment: GPA device, maps, camera, geology pick, sample bags

Objectives/Work Done: The purpose of this EVA was primarily for the photographers and reporters that were out today. We were in full sim and trekked over various terrain to simulate a Mars trek. Some important things the crew noticed: limitations of the suit in maneuverability (i.e. It was hard to do simple tasks such as writing notes, traversing rough terrain, and collecting samples).

Weather: Partly Cloudy

Maximum Distance from Hab: 0.88 km

Lessons Learned:
  • How to use the radios and to properly adjust equipment before egress.
  • The radios are of primary importance because it is very hard to communicate only through the helmets.
  • How to use the new GPA device to traverse the martian surface. It is a very good unit, and we were able to easily find out coordinates, and track our progress.
