Log Book for May 6, 2006
Commander's Check-In
Dr. William J. Clancey Reporting

Weather: Mostly sunny, beautiful day; increasing afternoon clouds, wind variable; low 4.4c (39.9F) high 31c (87.8F).

Crew Physical Status: Feeling very good.

Brief Narrative of Today's Results: We packed our equipment and some personal gear for the FedEx shipment. We thoroughly cleaned the hab, including galley areas that haven't been touched in a while (cabinet doors) or scrubbed very well (sinks, wood trim). Rick & Mike left for Salt Lake City at 11 am.

Don came to the hab after noon and reset the Direcway antenna. We will leave the configuration on WildBlue. We have shown the next crew how to switch over the router. We met the FedEx Custom Critical cargo van in Hanksville and loaded the truck. The driver will meet us at Ames at 2 pm Monday.

We refilled tires and restarted all three ATVs, but two have noticeable leaks. We briefed three crew members for Crew 50 (Tim, Joe, Mike) from 3:35 pm to 6 pm. We will repeat the most important aspects in the morning.

This is my last official report for Crew 49. In the mission summary I have listed the people who helped us. I would like to repeat here my gratitude to everyone who worked with us directly and behind the scenes. I would like to note especially how the Mars Society has for the fifth consecutive year made possible space exploration research for NASA with an analog habitat and support team that are unique in the world. My sincere thanks to every member of the Mars Society.

On to Mars!

EVA: No sims today.

Plans for Tomorrow: First group departs 7 am; second group departs about 10 am, after second briefing of Crew 50.

Report Transmission Schedule:

1. Engineering report (by 9 pm)
2. GreenHab report (already filed)

Inventory: We threw away anything doubtful and briefed the next crew on mice control.

Support Requested: Nothing required.

Miscellaneous: If you smell something like a dead animal near the sink, put your nose to the carpet and look at the mouse traps.

Bill Clancey
Commander, MDRS Crew 49
