Log Book for May 3, 2006
Commander's Check-In
Dr. William J. Clancey Reporting

Weather: Mostly sunny & warm, becoming partly cloudy and breezy; low 7.3c (45.1F) high 29.3c (84.7 F), humidity 16% at 5:15 pm.

Crew Physical Status: Productive, steady, but more subdued.

Brief Narrative of Today's Results: The improvements to the power agent monitoring system continued. I had hoped for some dry runs, but implementing ten new voice commands (with many variations) has required some iterative tuning to the recognition network, with long compiles.

We received the OneMeter firmware upgrade, but don't have the connector required. We also can't risk disabling the OneMeter system now, so we will stay with the 15 minute update frequency and integer data.

We have many times today wished the new system were already implemented. We would have liked to be alerted when the generator went offline, as its circuit breaker kept popping (perhaps from overheating in the sun). Or it would have been nice to tell Boudreaux the robot to inspect the generator for us. At least we know from context that our designs will be useful.

Rick provided a simple circuit diagram which explains why the generator reads 27+ volts (DC) when on float charge, but immediately drops to 24 (or less) when the generator goes online. The explanation concerns the resistance in the circuit and how it contributes to the voltage measured in the circuit under conditions of charging (adds to measured voltage) and discharging (subtracts from measured voltage). Rick prepared circuit diagrams for the hab power system and a preliminary "modes diagram" (with eight states corresponding to the relations of power usage, generator, and batteries).

EVA: Brent used the iMAS system today (see photos and report).

Plans for Tomorrow: Begin testing new voice commands in practical situations.

Report Transmission Schedule:

1. Engineering Report (by 9 pm)
2. GreenHab Report (by 9 pm)
3. EVA Report (by 9 pm)
4. Guest Journal (Rick Alena)
5. Inventory: Began coordination with next crew.

Support Requested: Next crew might require return of diesel generator to operation or another gas generator.

Miscellaneous: With apologies to Dr. Seuss--

You do not like green Martians?
I do not like them, Stan.
I do not like Mars, Stan.

I could not, would not, on a CEV.
I will not, will not, in zero G.
I will not greet them in cosmic rain.
I will not greet them orbiting Spain.
Not in the dark! Not in low gravity!
Not in a spacecraft! You let me be!

I do not like them in the hab.
I do not like them in confab.
I will not greet them in a house.
I will not greet them with Don Foutz.
I do not like them here or there.
I do not like them ANYWHERE!
I do not like green Martians!
I do not like them, Earthling-I-am.

You do not like them.
So you say.
Meet them! Meet them!
And you may.
Meet them and you may, I say.

Earthling!
If you will let me be, I will meet them.
You will see.

Say!
I like green Martians!
I do! I like them, Earthling-I-am!
And I would greet them in a CEV.
And I would greet them in zero G...

I do so like
Mars, Stan!
Thank you!
Thank you,
Earthling-I-am!
Bill Clancey
