Log Book for April 23, 2006
Engineering Report
Maarten Sierhuis Reporting
Generator/Electricity:
Casper: not used
Wendy Hobbs Meter: 3423.7 hrs (+26.7 hrs since yesterday)
Voltage: 120 VAC
Frequency: 60 Hz
Oil Level: 7/8
Oil Pressure: 30 PSI
Water Drained: no
Notes/Comments: Wendy's status was checked at 12:58pm and ended at 13:20pm. The second check was done at 18:55 and ended at 19:05.
Xantrex Inverter/Dynasty Batteries:
Time - Voltage (Temp Comp) - Load - Temp - Generator Running?
12:48 - 26.7 - 08 - 21 - on - float
18:40 - 26.8 - 08 - 21 - on - float
Fuel Status (as of 18:54):
Diesel: Approximate Reading - 3/4
Notes/Comments: We are refueling Wendy manually to keep it running because of the diesel leak reported by the previous crew. The oil pressure is down to 30. Don told us 35 is normal. We believe the generator must be stopped to change the oil. We believe we are unable to restart Wendy if we stop it. The fueling activity started at 13:02 and ended at 13:20. At the end of the fueling activity, i.e. when the tank was almost full we put the cap on as to avoid the fuel sprinkles coming out of the tank (due to fibration of Wendy). This resulted in a small overflow at the end of the fueling, because we could not see it was filling up as fast at the end. The second fueling started at 18:56 and ended at 19:05.
Propane Tank: Approximate Reading - 45% (450 gallons = 1703.4 L)
Gasoline: Quantity Remaining - 16 gallons = 60.6 L (-1 gallons since yesterday)
Oil:
GenSet Quantity: 7.5 quarts (no change since yesterday)
ATV Quantity: 9 quarts (no change since yesterday)
V'ger Quantity: 8 quarts (no change since yesterday)
Notes/Comments: Please advice what oil (color of cans) is for what vehicle? The numbers given are from the last report submitted by crew 48.
Water Status:
Outside Potable Water Tank Level: 280 gallons = 1059.9 L
Trailer Potable Water Tank Level: 80 cm from the base
Potable Water Meter Reading: NaN gallons = NaN L (+9990160 gallons since yesterday)
Out to Toilet Meter Reading: 2556.7 gallons = 9678.1 L (+18.7 gallons since yesterday)
In to GreenHab Meter Reading: 15050.2 gallons = 56971.0 L (+7.2 gallons since yesterday)
Flushes: 4
Showers: 0
Sponge Baths: 0
Notes/Comments: Please advice where to read the Potable Water Meter!!! The grey water pump is working. We have placed the grey water pump into the grey water tank/hole. We found a kink in the line feeding into Tank 1, and this may have explained the pumping problem experienced by Crew 48. We have detected a check valve near the OUTPUT flow meter, where grey water moves from the GreenHab to the hab. We decided this has no relation to the grey water pump, so we left it alone. The internal clean water tank refill pump did not work when we turned the pump back to auto. We jiggled the float and it filled to about level 10 (above #9), then shut off correctly (We had been told that 6 - 9 was the automatic level).
GreenHab:
Crops Watered: yes
Crop Condition: All alive. 50% very dry. Duckweed in tank #4 & #5 only
GreenHab Data:
- GreenHab out: 12:00pm=2547.4, 1:00pm=2547.4, 3:15pm=15049.5, 5:00pm=15050.2, 9:30pm=15050.5
- GreenHab in: 12:00pm=15043.5, 1:00pm=15045.9, 3:15pm=25505.5, 5:00pm=2556.7, 9:30pm=2559.8
- GreenHab diff: 12:00pm=12496, 1:00pm=12498, 3:15pm=10456, 5:00pm=12493 GH
- Temp (inside): 12:00pm=67F, 3:15pm=66F, 5:00pm=70F
- GH Temp (outside): 12:00pm=115F, 3:15pm=117F, 5:00pm=117F
- Humidity: 65%
- Plants is Mediocre Health: Nasturtiums, Mint1 and Mint2, Chives, Unknown, Peas 1, Duckweed (tank 3,4,5)
- Plants in Poor Health: Lettuce 1 and Lettuce 2, Spinach, Tomatoes, Peas 2 (in same pot as mint) dead, Duckweed (tank #1 & #2)
- Flushes: 6
Notes/Comments: Everything in the GreenHab is currently operating normally. There was a kink in the pipe through which grey water flows from the settling tank into Tank #1 in the GreenHab. The kink was removed and the pump from the settling tank (which had been pulled out and put in a bucket outside the settling tank) was put back into the settling tank. This resulted in resumption of flow of grey water into the GreenHab. Water is now trickling from Tank#1 all the way into Tank#5 and toilet flushing has been tested to work properly.
Transportation:
V'ger: Used - yes
Oil Checked: no
Fuel Consumed: NaN gallons = NaN L
Tire Status: ??
Odometer: NaN miles (+831244 miles since yesterday)
Kawasaki ATV 1: Used - no
Oil Checked: no
Tire Status: good
Kawasaki ATV 2: Used - no
Oil Checked: no
Tire Status: Right Front Tire needs air, Left Rear Ti
Kawasaki ATV 3: Used - no
Oil Checked: no
Tire Status: Right Front Tire is flat
Notes/Comments: V'ger has been taken to SLC by Crew 48. We have not used the ATV's today
HVAC: Nothing new to report.
Mars Surface Suits: Nothing new.
Computers/Networking Infrastructure: We have set up the WildBlue system to distribute addresses wirelessly through our own router, MDRS-ARC. We changed the MAC address of the router so it looked like a PC to the WildBlue modem. We have setup our Epson CX 5200 Color USB printer as a network printer using an Airport Express attached to our network hub. The printer is working for Windows XP computers, however we're still having problems getting them to work on our Apple OS X machines. We're still working the issue.
Appliances: Found the 2nd Slow Cooker. We lit the oven pilot light, following instructions.
Data Logger: Nothing new.
Upgrade Work: Nothing new.
