EVA Report
Jason Sherwin & Jan Osburg Reporting

EVA Number: 01

Objectives: To record test measurements with a sextant for the celestial navigation research and with the Gamma Scout for the radiation surveys; to test the radiocommunication and position transmission system; to familiarize crewmembers with EVA equipment and procedures.

EVA Commander: Osburg
EVA Navigator: Rome
EVA Crew: Sherwin
Hab Comm: Colvin

Planned Route: MDRS - to the area around the balloon launch pad (200m NE of MDRS) - MDRS - ATV training ground S of Cougar Hill - MDRS

Timeline:
Don Suits: 1146MST
Enter Airlock: 1210MST
Egress: 1215MST
Ingress: 1444MST
Enter Hab: 1446MST

New Waypoints Established: none

Narrative: The EVA began with Rome's sextant measurements of the sun's position 100m NE of MDRS at 1218MST with Sherwin assisting. However, measurements were not possible because the sun was too high in the sky. Rome and Sherwin then circled the low hills around the balloon launch pad taking radiation and GPS measurements. Rome returned to making measurements with the sextant, while Osburg and Sherwin took radiation measurements on the hills to the west of MDRS.

At 1305MST, Osburg returned to assist Rome with sextant measurements. Sherwin continued radiation measurements in the vicinity of MDRS and examining individual rocks around the balloon launch pad. Preliminary observations indicate that rocks or sand will not have a noticeable effect on radiation doses (v/hr), however a subsequent EVA will test this prediction in a formal experiment.

Osburg, Sherwin and Rome then returned to MDRS to perform All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) training while in the EVA suits. ATV training was successfully completed S of Cougar Hill though ATV #3 stalled several times when idling.
