Project MAST Summary
Hugh S. Gregory Reporting
Good evening from analogue Selene at the Mars Desert Research Station. Today's weather today was a nice mixture of sun and cloud, I decided to this to my advantage during my ATV transit out to MDRS and add a bonus feature for Project MAST.
Too many crews in the past have not been able to find the turn off from Highway 24 onto Lowell Highway. They usually under shoot and turn off into the stream bed at the foot of the hill just short of the actual turn off.
So I decided to do a MAST data run along the main road from the Whispering Sands, over the bridge and all the way out of town to Lowell Highway's southern end.
This process involved stopping every 100 to 200 meters and taking a pair photo's forward and aft so that should the user do a "U" turn they will end up on the proper side of the highway facing in the direction of desired travel.
As with all MAST images, during my post mission processing a compass will be added to the lower left corner of the image to enable the VR user to know roughly in which cardinal direction the image was taken.
To keep things simplified MAST has chosen just to use the primary eight aiming directions of North, North East, East, South East, South, South West, West and North West. Thus each MAST travel direction has some "play" in the actual compass orientation of about 22.5 degrees to either side of the cardinal point chosen to represent the rough direction the image is facing. Please note, had I gone for accurate to the degree measurements, I would still be out there taking data a year from now and incoming crews and our arm chair space exploring supporters world wide would be waiting forever for this program.
With the MAST data run complete, I continued on out to the HAB to see if the Heinlein Memorial Tunnel was ready for photographing. It still needs another couple of meters of mesh roofing to complete it so I will return tomorrow to get these images.
The return to the Lowellville Pressure Dome was uneventful and I spent the evening catching up on email that had piled up while I was sick and worked on the delayed reports.
Good night to all back on Earth from Project MAST on analogue Selene at MDRS.
