Log Book for March 9, 2006
Engineering Report
Steven Winikoff & Ben Huset Reporting

Generator/Electricity:

Casper: not used

Wendy Hobbs Meter: 2946.9 hrs
Voltage: 120 VAC
Frequency: 62 Hz
Oil Level: full
Oil Pressure: 30 PSI
Water Drained: yes

Notes/Comments: For a while today we were seeing the same symptoms we had on Tuesday, albeit at a slower rate: every so often the inverter's AC2 LED would flash, and the charging would stop. This eventually stopped by itself, but not until it had taken nearly six hours to charge the batteries to 24.1 volts (temp. comp.).

Xantrex Inverter/Dynasty Batteries:
Time - Voltage (Temp Comp) - Load - Temp - Generator Running?

20:32 - 22.4 - 00 - 17 - off
20:40 - 25.4 - 10 - 17 - on
01:28 - 27.4 - 14 - 17 - on
01:34 - 24.4 - 14 - 17 - off
07:52 - 23.0 - 13 - 15 - off
15:03 - 26.7 - 12 - 18 - on
15:12 - 24.1 - 12 - 18 - off
18:11 - 22.5 - 19 - 17 - off
18:29 - 25.9 - 15 - 17 - on
19:32 - 26.4 - 07 - 18 - on

GenSet Quantity: 0 quarts
ATV Quantity: 10.5 quarts
V'ger Quantity: 14.5 quarts

Water Status:

Outside Potable Water Tank Level: 250 gallons = 946.4 L
Trailer Potable Water Tank Level: 0 cm from the base
Water Meter Reading: 7755.3 gallons = 29356.9 L

Tonight's Meter Readings:
Out to Toilet: 1361.4 (+36.4 since yesterday)
In to GreenHab: 7143.4 (+2883.3 since yesterday)

Notes/Comments: We have a new record today. I don't think all our tanks combined can even hold that much water.

GreenHab:

Crops Watered: no
Crop Condition: The white fly appears to be back.
Notes/Comments: Once again the press of events has prevented the plants from being watered today; that will happen after this report has been sent.

Notes/Comments: No EVAs today.

HVAC: Last night and again this morning, the furnace stopped working following a brief power outage. In both cases the LED was blinking continuously, which signals that the input polarity must be reversed -- but in both cases the furnace started up again immediately when the circuit breaker was manually tripped and reset.

Mars Surface Suits: No EVAs today.

Computers/Networking Infrastructure: Nothing further to report.

Appliances: Nothing further to report.

Data Logger: Nothing further to report.

Upgrade Work: Ben did further work on revising the web cams, and a new one is now installed over the satellite receiver (not the dish, bu the receiver inside the hab). In addition, he determined the reason why the computer can't rotate the observatory dome is that the wires leading to the dome motion sensor are broken. This will be repaired (re-soldered) ASAP.

Notes/Comments: The day began with a small electrical fire, that started at 07:54 with a short in a power bar under the computer table on the second floor of the hab. Many thanks to William and Laurel who were on the spot, and who extinguished the fire quickly and professionally and also supervised the subsequent evacuation. There were no injuries, and the only damage was sustained by the power bar itself, which is now bagged awaiting further inspection.
