Log Book for March 3, 2006
Health, Safety, & Human Factors Report
William Fung-Schwarz Reporting

Crewmember & Individual Health: Physically and emotionally the crew is doing better today. We are coordinating efforts to allow a rotation of "vacation" days for various members of the crew. This evening's reports were sent in early to allow for some group recreation time.

Team Wellness: A certain schedule and rhythm is developing at the Moonbase. Certain tasks are starting to get done without prompting by the Commander or Executive Officer.

Safety Inspection: A major part of fire/life safety is making sure that unused equipment and supplies are stored appropriately (and in appropriate places). Excess cardboard, computer parts from 1989, and items ready to be retired (Lunar dust encrusted pillows that have been in the loft since 2002) are items that one might consider removing from the station. On a real Moonbase, material management will be well thought out (and equipment and supplies stored in fire-resistant packing); however, at MDRS we do not have that luxury. Care must be taken as to which items to jettison (coordinating with all Mission Support sub-groups) so that it can be communicated what is and is not at the station.

Human Factors Research: Informal conversations between and among crewmembers have contributed significantly to the qualitative data collection process.

Daily Evening Group Sharing Activity:
(to protect crewmember privacy, responses have been grouped and only composite themes are reported)
  • Thorns: (Hassles/Challenges/Threats) not feeling completely well,
  • Roses: (Uplifts/Salutogenic Factors) gorgeous EVA today, riding ATV, finally having some information "down time" to converse/socialize with crew
Plans for Tomorrow:
  • Assist Leslie with ergonomics motion study (comparing the MDRS Analogue Suit to the new prototype MoonSkin MCP suit)
  • Assist Laurel with CICSS/Wetware and food inventory management
  • Begin mid-mission cleaning (staring with lower level/laboratory)
  • Begin cleaning and organizing the HSO cabinet
  • Coordinate with Steven, Paul Graham, and Engineering Team on best ways to improve trail going to Musk Observatory (to prevent slips, trips, and falls)
Plan for Tomorrow:
  • Support Commander and the Executive Officer in crewmember orientation and continued training.
  • Support ATV and Moon Analogue Suit training and familiarization.
  • Support collection of media (photography/videography)
  • Carry out Bi-weekly Habitat safety inspection
