EVA Reports
Crew 44 Reporting

EVA-6 Report:
Lealem Mulugeta

Start EVA: 10:27
End EVA: 12:40
Ryan: (Executive Officer)
Danielle: (Chief Engineer)
Kevin: (HSO/Field Engineer)
Lealem: (Feld Engineer)
Jonathan: (Researcher)

Destination Name: Phobos Peak

Destination GPS: UTM NAD27 - 518 641 4249 499 (UTM WGS84 - 518 5764249 703)

EVA Goals: The objective of the EVA was to give the crew further training on proper use of GPS and datalogger for field reconnaissance. The crew was also given the objective of identifying if there is Dakota sandstone at Phobos Peak and whether or not it is in-situ with the Morrison shale. Finally, the objectives of the EVA were also designed to further enforce the objectives of EVA 4 and EVA 5, which were to train the crew in field reconnaissance in accordance with HERMES.

Results: From the crew's observations it was determined that a large portion of the sandstone at Phobos Peak, and the surrounding area was not in-situ with the Morrison shale. This was easily identified by the fact that the sandstone was littered all around Phobos Peak instead of being a fully intact top layer over the Morrison shale. Before returning to the hab, a panoramic shot was taken from the top Phobos Peak.

Special Notes: On our way back to the hab, we came across natural formations that looked very much like ancient man made structures such as Stonehenge and Roman roads.

Waypoints: Waypoints were taken at the hab, a survey point, at the top of Phobos Peak, and at various sites that are of geological and biological interest.

Lessons Learned: When on pedestrian EVA, especially on a hot day, it is important not to over exert one self as it can sometimes be difficult to breath underneath the EVA helmets.

EVA-7 Report:
Melissa Battler

Start EVA: 13:27
End EVA: 16:49
Andre: (Geologist)
John: (Biologist)
Melissa: (Commander)

Destination Name: Candor Chasma

EVA Goals: Collect samples for John's halophile study, and identify lithology in Candor Chasma for Andre's geological map.

Results: John collected 8 out of 12 desired samples, and noted that it took approximately 5 times longer to do sampling in a space suit, than in a normal situation. Andre identified 2 geological formations out of 3 that he hoped to see. Melissa took samples of several horizons within the lower shale-y formation (potentially the Carmel Formation?).

Special Notes: ATV's operated very well. Also, the chasm was beautiful! See daily photos...

Waypoints: Andre took 4 waypoints, and John took 8; see science reports for details.

Lessons Learned: Melissa brought a toolbox to use for carrying geology samples; this worked well. Also, all 3 participants experienced shoulder pain due to the helmet resting uncomfortably… we may try to fit shoulder pads under the suits somehow. Also, all 3 participants felt very winded after climbing out of the chasm.
