Commander's Check-In
Melissa Battler Reporting

EVA: We had an extremely successful out-of-sim geology and biology training EVA today. The three scientists took turns lecturing about field research and sampling techniques in their fields of expertise, then the crew went out to explore the Dakota sandstone outcrop just off of highway 24, at mile marker 111.

Crew Physical Status: Everyone is healthy and happy, and having a great time on Mars.

Brief Narrative of Today's Results: Today we got caught up on emails with mission support, engineering, and RST, and then the scientists took turns talking to the crew about Astrobiology, and some basic geology and biology. We then went on our EVA to apply our new knowledge in the field, and then returned to the hab with rock samples. We each took turns discussing our samples, and what each rock might tell us about paleoenvironment, water, life, and implications if this rock was found on Mars (see EVA/Training Report for more). Tonight, the scientists will take turns giving powerpoint presentations about their specific research at MDRS; this will conclude the official science training portion of the mission.

Plans for Tomorrow: Tomorrow we will start our training on HERMES field exploration methodology, and go on at least one (possibly two) EVA(s) to practice HERMES.

Report Transmission Schedule:

1.Commander's Check-In, 19:20 (sorry, a few minutes late…)
2. Engineering Report, 19:00
3. EVA/Training Reports, 21:00
4. Science Reports, 21:00
5. Journalist Report, 21:00
6. Photographs, 21:00
7. HSO Report, 21:00

Maintenance: Danielle dug a hole in the puddle to search for the leak, and Lealem did maintenance work on the space suit helmets.

Inventory: n/a

Miscellaneous: The crew had another excellent day, and proved to be very fast learners in the field. We're looking forward to starting science EVA's and putting our skills to use! Some of us also enjoyed a gorgeous sunrise this morning, and a beautiful sunset tonight. And, Ryan performed a special Canadian EVA… (see Journalist Report and/or EVA Report for more)

Support Requested: none
