Crew 40 Reporting

EVA-24:
Natalie Cutler Reporting

Objectives: To explore the Barsoom Outcrops. To mark GPS waypoints on the Copernicus Hwy for future crews to use.

EVA Team:
Crew: Natalie Cutler, Tiziana Trabucchi, Cecile Sainte-Marie
Hab Comm: Sheryl Bishop

Planned Route: Lowell Hwy, Copernicus Hwy via Ptolemy Trail to Barsoom Outcrops.

Timeline:
Ingress: 1045 MDT
Egress: 1320 MDT

New Waypoints Established:
  • 'COPINT' - intersection of Ptolemy trail with Copernicus Hwy
    Elevation: 1370m
    12 S 0516392
    UTM 4255119

  • 'INT6' - waypoint of split in Copernicus Hwy to turn off to Barsoom Outcrops.
    Elevation: 1345m
    12 S 0517503
    UTM 4256546

  • 'BAROUT - furthest point reached on EVA, in Barsoom Outcrops region.
    Elevation: 1348m
    12 S 0517196
    UTM 4256881
Narrative: Ptolemy Trail GPS waypoint marked earlier in the week. Followed GPS intersection waypoints to Ptolemy trail. Followed this road to the intersection with the Copernicus Hwy. Marked a waypoint at this intersection so we can work out where exactly this intersection is.

We then wanted to find the 'real' Snoshti Canyon, now that we have correlated the GPS readings with the UTM coordinate map. The landscape looked very different in this area. The road followed a winding gully, rather than a canyon, with many gullies branching off to the side. No sign of a canyon. We stopped and walked deeper into one of the side-gullies to see if it lead through to Snoshti. It didn't lead anywhere, nor was the geology particularly interesting.

The nearby gully walls were too steep and covered in loose soil to climb higher for a view of the surrounding area. So we returned to the ATVs and continued along the trail towards the Barsoom Outcrops. We found and marked a waypoint where the Copernicus Hwy! divided into two tracks, though one was very faint. We followed the other to the left towards our destination.

The road deteriorated fast, with many washouts and large boulders to negotiate. This slowed us down, so once we had driven up to the top of the first hill in the Barsoom Outcrops region, we had to turn back in order to get back to the Hab as scheduled. The view was wonderful, but the geology very similar to other locations visited during the mission, unfortunately.

EVA-25
Anne Pacros Reporting

Objectives: CRV tests and demonstration for a TV crew

EVA Team:
Anne Pacros, Christyne Legault, Cecile Sainte Marie
Hab Comm: Sheryl Bishop

Planned Route: Lowell highway to the Mona Lisa canyon

Timeline:
Egress: 1500 MDT
Ingress: 1700 MDT

New Waypoints Established: none

Narrative: Short EVA to the Mona Lisa canyon to demonstrate how to use the CRV for a TV crew. We had two persons to operate the CRV on top of the cliff, and one person at the bottom of the cliff to report observations about the behaviour of the vehicle. We chose a very steep cliff but with a lot of rocks and “intermediate platforms”. We did two tests on that cliff. On the first one the CRV reached successfully a first platform. On the second test, the CRV almost made it to the ground, but like on a previous test it flipped over because of a bump.
