Log Book for May 12, 2005
EVA Reports
Crew 40 Reporting

EVA-21:
Anne Pacros, Christyne Legault & Cécile Sainte Marie Reporting

Objectives: To investigate more of Lith Canyon.

EVA Team:
Crew: Anne Pacros, Christyne Legault and Cécile Sainte Marie
Hab Comm: Tiziana Trabucchi

Planned Route: Lith Canyon through Lowell Highway.

Timeline:
Ingress: 1100 MDT
Egress: 1400 MDT

New Waypoints Established: None

Narrative: We went a little bit further in Lith Canyon and found again the same items as during EVA 17 on May 10th: mainly petrified wood, but no fossils.

EVA-22:
Natalie Cutler Reporting

Objectives: To attempt to get closer to the sapping site coordinates for Lith Canyon. To revisit 'Snoshti' Canyon located yesterday and explore this further.

EVA Team:
Crew: Natalie Cutler, Sheryl Bishop, Tiziana Trabucchi
Hab Comm: Anne Pacros

Planned Route: Lith Canyon via Lowell Highway. 'Snoshti' canyon via main road waypointed yesterday.

Timeline:
Ingress: 1530 MDT
Egress: 1800 MDT

New Waypoints Established:
  • 'MONA' waypoint deeper in new canyon.
    Elevation: 1340m
    12 S 0518400
    UTM 4256623

  • 'INT4' waypoint of split in Lowell Highway.
    Elevation: 1389m
    12 S 0519459
    UTM 4255981
Narrative: Journeyed along Lowell highway to where it splits into two roads of equal 'travelledness' despite this split not appearing on the map. Took the left fork and followed in direction of sapping site coordinates suggested by RST. Unfortunately, this road did not lead closer to the sapping site - there was still a large arm of Lith canyon between us and the waypoint. Stopped the ATVs at the end of the road. We returned to Lith canyon from this different entry point as Sheryl had not been there. Saw the landmark white mound which was can see from this canyon, and from the canyon we thought was Snoshti. Rain was moving in our direction so we returned to the ATVs to try to get to 'Snoshti' canyon in time.

We arrived at the second canyon, which we are fairly sure now is not Snoshti, though the road goes almost directly past it. Climbed down the cliffs and hiked further into the beautiful canyon than we had had time for yesterday. Around every corner the canyon gets more and more beautiful, and we had to almost drag our geologist out of there in order to get back to the Hab on time! Marked a waypoint 'MONA' at the furthest point we reached in the beautiful canyon.

EVA-23:
Christyne Legault Reporting

Objectives: Short EVA to install one student experiment and do one short student experiment

EVA Team:
Crew: Tiziana, Sheryl, Natalie, Christyne
HabCom: Cécile Ste-Marie
Planned Route: Around the Hab

Timeline:
Egress: 1530 MDT
Ingress: 1610 MDT

Narration: I conducted a short EVA to complete two students' experiments. First experiment; install the solar energy system at the top of a cliff in the back of the Hab. Second experiment; to test my ability to do the predestined route to be used in case of an emergency evacuation. Good score!
