EVA Reports
Crew 40 Reporting
EVA-14:
Sheryl Bishop, Tiziana Trabucchi & Cécile Sainte Marie Reporting
Objectives: We decided to go back to the Mona Lisa Canyon South of the Hab to test the CRV and to conduct the stratigraphy test (try to draw strata with the MDRS and the MarsSkin suits).
EVA Team:
Crew: Sheryl Bishop, Tiziana Trabucchi & Cécile Sainte Marie
Hab Comm: Anne Pacros
Planned Route: Mona Lisa Canyon South of the Hab via Lowell Highway.
Timeline:
Egress: 1030 MDT
Ingress: 1240 MD
New Waypoints Established: N/A
Narrative: Tiziana stayed in the canyon to have a closer look to the geology and to take pictures of Sheryl and Cécile using the CRV on the top of the cliffs. We performed 5 CRV experiments with the video camera recording. The 3 first experiments were carried out with the stiff anti-roll rods on 3 different steep cliffs. Although the weather was very windy, the CRV performance was satisfactory. The 4th experiment was made with the flexible anti-roll rods on the 1st steep cliff tested. We noticed no difference between the two types of anti-roll rods, but we will have to watch the corresponding film to check. Then we decided to test the CRV on a gentler sloped cliff but the wind was too strong: the wheels bent and one of the flexible anti-roll rods broke so we decided to stop the trial. The stratigraphy test was impossible to do with the intense wind and was postponed until tomorrow.
EVA-15:
Anne Pacros Reporting
Objectives: Outside pictures of the Hab for engineering documentation
EVA Team:
Commander: Anne Pacros
Crew: Natalie Cutler
Hab Comm: Cecile Sainte Marie
Planned Route: Hab vicinity
Timeline:
Don Suits: 1300 MDT
Enter Airlock: 1315 MDT
Egress: 1317 MDT
Ingress: 1415 MDT
Enter Hab: 1417 MDT
New Waypoints Established: none
Narrative: Short walk all around the Hab, taking pictures to show the status of all the systems. Also practiced re-inflating the tyres of the ATVs in the spacesuits, with the small portable air compressor (plugged in the 12V outlet of one of the ATVs).
EVA-16:
Sheryl Bishop Reporting
Objectives: Return to Candor Chasma to scout surface ridges for geological specimens.
EVA Team:
Crew: Tiziana Trabucchi and Sheryl Bishop
Hab Comm: Anne Pacros
Planned Route: Follow Lowell Highway to Cactus Road to waypoint established on previous EVA to mark dry gulch turnoff to track to Candor Chasma.
Timeline:
Enter Airlock: 14:40 MDT
Egress: 14:42 MDT
Enter Airlock: 16:00 MDT
Ingress: 16:02 MDT
Narrative: After navigating via the waypoints established on Day 8 to Candor Chasma, we spent an hour walking the ridges and climbed down into one of the shallower feeder canyons that was accessible from the ridge to look for geological specimens. The area has seen significant disturbance by the recent and persistent rains. High winds also made approach to some of the ledges unsafe. Tiziana picked up a few rock samples that have previously been identified. We stopped at several spots along the dry wash as we returned to the hab to investigate potential outcroppings but collected nothing of note.
