EVA-11 Report
Tiziana Trabucchi & Cécile Sainte Marie Reporting
Objectives: As the weather was very sunny, we decided to explore Snoshti Canyon, which is about 6 km North North West of the Hab on Copernicus Highway. We drove the ATVs and mainly studied the geology there and on the road.
EVA Team:
Crew: Tiziana Trabucchi and Cécile Sainte Marie
Hab Comm: Sheryl Bishop
Planned Route: Snoshti Canyon through Schapiarelli Highway, Ptolemy Trail and Copernicus Highway.
Timeline:
Egress: 1000 MDT
Ingress: 1330 MD
New Waypoints Established:
- Ptolemy Trail
Elevation: 1414m
12S 0516073
UTM: 4254367
- Snoshti Canyon
Elevation: 1335m
12S 0517965
UTM: 4256760
Narrative: We had troubles staying on the track on Schapiarelli Highway but finally managed to reach Ptolemy Trail. See the Geology Report for more details about what we found in Snoshti Canyon and on the way.
EVA-12
Natalie Cutler Reporting
Objectives: To setup student experiments in the Hab vicinity. To have another subject perform the 'Operation Evacuation' experiment.
EVA-11 Team:
Crew: Christyne Legault, Natalie Cutler
Hab Comm: Sheryl Bishop
Planned Route: Hab vicinity
Timeline:
Egress: 11:15 MDT
Ingress: 11:45 MDT
New Way points Established: None
Narrative: A suitably sunny location was identified and the student solar panel experiment was deployed in this location behind the Hab. Rocks were used to hold the equipment in place, as we expect further windy conditions. This equipment will remain in place collecting data for 2 days.
Next, a soil samples were collected for later humidity analysis. Two samples were to be collected - one on the surface of the soil, and the other 60cm deep. The surface sample was taken successfully, however the team discovered the ground contains a significant amount of rock, and digging to 60cm was impossible. The soil sample was taken as deep as the team could dig.
Finally, Christyne performed the 'Operation Evacuation' experiment, as performed by Anne and Natalie several days earlier. She achieved a record time for this test, but with the hot sun beating down this exertion brought an early end to the EVA.
EVA-13
Anne Pacros Reporting
Objectives: Marking GPS waypoints to Candor Chasma
EVA Team:
Commander: Anne Pacros
Crew: Natalie Cutler, Sheryl Bishop
Hab Comm: Cecile Sainte Marie
Planned Route: Candor Chasma via Cactus road
Timeline:
Don Suits: 1615 MDT
Enter Airlock: 1630 MDT
Egress: 1632 MDT
Ingress: 1808 MDT
Enter Hab: 1810 MDT
New Waypoints Established:
- RT1: Turn right to leave the highway
12S 0519046
UTM 4251485
- RT2: Second turn right
12S 0519844
UTM 4251237
- ICC1: Intersection, turn left to go to first viewpoint
12S 0520220
UTM 4250752
- CC1: First viewpoint over Candor Chasma (dead end, then go back to CC1)
12S 0520375
UTM 4250858
- ICC2: Intersection, turn left to go to second viewpoint
12S 0520329
UTM 4250164
- CC2: Second viewpoint over Candor Chasma
12S 0521046
UTM 4250488
Narrative: Last week, as we did not have any GPS, we found a canyon that we thought to be Candor Chasma, but it was not (it was much farther north). So today we wanted to check the location of the "real" Candor Chasma with the GPS. And we found it! We marked waypoints all along our way because due to the recent rain and dust storms, only the roads labelled as "highways" can be identified; the smaller tracks are very difficult to find. Finally we found a few nice spots for possible CRV tests and then we had to drive back to the Hab because "Here comes the rain again..."
