EVA Reports
Sheryl Bishop, Tiziana Trabucchi & Cécile Sainte Marie Reporting

EVA-9.1

Objectives: We decided to have an EVA with the whole Mona Lisa team using the pressurised Rover. Our destination was Factory Butte and Goblin Valley. However, we discovered after following many dirt roads that the route to Goblin Valley was washed out by a river caused by all the recent rains. So, making the best of things, we proceeded to stop and investigate several interesting sites along our way. Our goals were to practise the EVA procedure with the pressurised Rover, to investigate the differences between the MDRS suits and the MarsSkin suits and to study the geology of the sites visited. We departed the Hab from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm.

EVA Team:
Crew: Anne Pacros, Tiziana Trabucchi and Christyne Legault
Hab Comm: None

Planned Route: Short EVA in a small canyon on our way to Goblin Valley.

Timeline:
Egress: 1130 MDT
Ingress: 1200 MD

New Waypoints Established:
  • Elevation: 1412m
  • 12S 0504658
  • UTM: 4260353

Narrative: Our first EVA away team 9.1 was at GPS coordinates noted above. Since this site required the team to cross a small river, we were able to demonstrate the differences in flexibility between the MDRS suits and the MarsSkin suits. Tiziana found some nice rocks to study (more details in the geology report).

    EVA-9.2

    EVA Team:
Crew: Sheryl Bishop, Natalie Cutler and Cécile Sainte Marie
    Hab Comm: None

Planned Route: Short EVA near Factory Butte to a sharp pinnacle.

    Timeline:
    Egress: 1330 MDT
    Ingress: 1345 MD

    New Waypoints Established:
  • Elevation: 1459m
  • 12S 0510068
  • UTM: 4256145

Narrative: The second EVA away team 9.2 was at GPS coordinates noted above. The team noticed an unusual outcropping of rock. It was decided that this pinnacle would be the destination for the second EVA as it would require a moderate amount of climbing culminating at a rock face where the geologist could investigate the strata. Upon arrival at the rock face, it was determined that the cliff was composed of friable strata.
