Log Book for May 3, 2005
Engineering Report
Natalie Cutler Reporting

Generator/Electricity:
Generator temporary set-up described in yesterday's engineering report is operating successfully. Generator was restarted this morning at 09:00. Run until 12:30 to recharge HAB batteries which dropped to 24V when generator was switched off last night, and registered only 22.8V this morning before the generator was started. Generator was turned off at 12:30 reading 2151.6hrs. Ran HAB on battery until 16:15 when generator restarted to recharge batteries and provide power for peak usage period. Generator will be switched off around 23:00 tonight.

As generator appears to be nominal, we will follow the following procedure:

Generator will be run between 09:00 - 12:00 and then again 16:00 at 23:00 approx.
Hab will run on battery at all other times.
At request from Don, alternator fuse will be inspected tomorrow before generator restart.

At 16:15:
Oil Pressure: 39
Oil Level: Full
Generator battery voltage: High in "yellow" range

At 19:00: Hab battery Voltage: 26.6V

Fuel Status:
Fuel status no change from yesterdays report:
Generator Aux fuel tank: three quarters full
Propane tank: 46%
ATV fuel (red gasoline) tanks: 7 full, 1 half full, 3 empty
Diesel fuel bottles: 2 full

Oil Bottles:
  • Grade=30: 8xfull (for Generator and also can be used for ATVs)
  • Grade=20-50: 1xhalf full (for Blue Truck and ATVs)
  • Grade=5-30: 1xfull

Note: Understand the Grade 30 oil can be used for all vehicles (Blue Truck, Generator and ATVs) in current temperatures. Request confirmation.

    Water Status:
Still trying to use slightly more water than normal for the GreenHab which is stabilising.
Internal tank: At 09:00 read 39 gallons. Refilled at 16:35 (29 to 55 gal) ie 26 gal added. At 19:25 read 34 gallons. Total usage as measured by tank = 26 gal

    Water meter change: 2103.8 (09:00) to 2129.7 (19:25).
Total usage as measured by water meter = 25.9 gal
External water tank: 25 inches deep. Note that yesterday"s report was incorrect and should have read 26 inches deep, not 23 inches.
    Flushes: 7
Showers: 4 (Still trying to top up GreenHab tanks, but gradually scaling back shower requirements)

Transportation: ATVs: ATV #2 is still idling too low, crew member will adjust tomorrow. ATV #1 had a slightly flat rear left tire compared to the other vehicle tires, which was pumped up with the compressor before the second EVA today.

    Fuel Levels:
  • ATV #1: just below full
  • ATV #2: full
  • ATV #3: full

Mars Suits: Suits #2, #6 and #3 used for EVAs today. Other suits found to have various problems meaning they could not be used for EVA. Assessment made of state of all suits today. Suit outer layer with very large hole patched. PLSS #4 had no on/off switch, just bare wires. A pair of insulated electrical connectors was crimped on to fix this. PLSS #4 had one air hose almost torn off. This was replaced by a spare air hose from the EVA prep room. Most PLSS air hoses are starting to perish, and duct tape patches were applied to any holes observed. PLSS #5 fans are not working despite batteries indicating they are charged. The fans can be heard struggling to spin. The cause of this will be investigated further tomorrow.

The outer layer of the suits are very dirty, but generally in good repair now. One or two suits need repairs, esp to the metal snaps, many of which are broken, but nothing major. Helmet #5 the PTT switch has a sticky connection, resulting in it staying "pressed" for about 5-10secs after it is released by the astronaut. To be investigated further tomorrow.

Note: for "summer" EVAs the helmets with an unshielded air outlet are good for minimising sweating while on EVA. The temperature in the helmets rises fast in the sun and the direct airflow over the face is very helpful.

HVAC: Heating not required in last 24hrs.

    Computers & Network: Operational.

GreenHab: TFT pump moved out of tank #4 into tank #5 this evening. Tank #4 had some slight suds on surface, which began dissipating during the afternoon.

Crew is not familiar enough with Duckweed and Waterfern (despite website images) to determine which tanks have which growing and whether or not the growths we observe are good or bad. However, GreenHab images from April 21, 2004 looks NOTHING like what we have in our tanks at the moment. Tank #1 has plants growing, but not as dense as the images suggest it should. The other tanks have "slime" on the surface, not "weed". We will take detailed photos of the surface of each tank tomorrow and email them through with the engineering report. In the meantime the levels are as follows:
  • Tank #1: full
  • Tank #2: full
  • Tank #3: full
  • Tank #4: full
  • Tank #5: 3 inches low

    Miscellaneous: None
