Log Book for April 30, 2005
Engineering Report
Georg Grillmayer Reporting

Generator/Electricity:
The generator worked well so far, but on our last day it was not cooperative any more. The Generator was switched off at 22:00, April 29
Battery: 27V
Engine: 2119.6h
When cranking it up today at 12:00 after approx. 1 minute the batteries died, so we had to use the truck battery to restart it. The generator then was running but there was no current coming from it. All the meters on the display did not indicate any load or voltage and accordingly the inverter show 0V at the AC 1 input. The Hab battery reached 21.5V in the early afternoon and the inverter shut off the power supply. The com computer was running on the UPS so we still could communicate via the satellite link.
We stopped the generator again and repeated the startup procedure using the truck battery. It then worked though it is still a mystery to me why. I think that either the black generator lead battery is dead and needs to be replaced or the internal charging circuit is not working anymore. Current voltage is 26.6V. The generator is at 2125.1 engine hours.
The Coleman backup generator could not be started and is also not wired. Tony said it produces voltage spikes and could damage the inverter.
