EVA-21
Mathias Bonnet Reporting
EVA-21 started at 11:00 and ended around 16:00. The 3 ATVs were used. The EVA crewmembers were K.Klaus, R.Annes and M.Bonnet. The former used a MDRS Mars suit, while the other two used the Mars skin suits with MDRS backpacks and helmets.
The purpose of this EVA was essentially to make use of the CRV possibilities to serve the scientific objectives of our geologist (Kurt). The CRV mount turned out to be pretty robust as the crew headed east through bumpy Cactus Road.
A few stopovers were made on the way for our geologist to collect some sand samples the forward contamination endolith studies. The crew finally made it to the towering cliffs of the DaVinci Lookout after a few hesitations on the directions.
Our geologist advised us on the location that was better at showing the geological layers he was interested in. This choice had to be a compromise between the scientific goals and the CRV engineering requirements. Indeed a too accidental cliff could put the risk of being unable to extricate the CRV from the rocks.
The CRV was sent down the plunging cliff face for about 20m. It could not be brought down any lower to the red layers of the Entrada sandstone even though the strings were long enough. The knots joining the different string parts were getting stuck at the edge of the overhang.
The view of the cliff has been recorded on the main video camera. The crew came back with about 1/2 full fuel tanks.
EVA-22
Georg Grillmayer Reporting
EVA-22 started at 16:00 and ended at around 19:00. Two ATVs were used by James and Georg.
The purpose of this EVA was to document with the help of GPS the tracks of the two last white areas on our map. First we were looking for Old Lowell Highway but apart from a wash couldn’t find a road or path. We then went up north and followed Lowell Highway beyond Brahe Highway until we reached the dead end at the cliffs of Muddy Creek.
For the second part of the EVA we followed Copernicus Highway down south past Sagan Street until we reached the main asphalt road. From there we went east until we found a dry riverbed. We recognized an old passage for a road but there was no bridge anymore. With the help of the ATVs we crossed the riverbed and climbed back up on the other side. Our intention was to find the Schiaparelli Highway back north but instead we found an extension of the Radio Ridge Road and finally followed it back to the Hab.
