Geology Report
Kurt Klaus Reporting
EVA team 9 went out this morning to find and re-open the Cactus Road. We ended up taking the road until its end which is east of the Crew 22 Map. The road ends in eroded hills at the base of the Summerville formation. We took a short hike down to sandstone cliffs which I think are the Curtis formation, greenish gray sandstone that lies below the Summerville. There is a spectacular view of a wide canyon on the Muddy Creek with the cliffs we were standing on rising 50-60 meters above the canyon floor. On the opposite side of the Canyon to the east of us we could see the Entrada Sandstone below the Curtis we were standing on. On our side of the canyon to the south and behind us a bit we could see the Summerville rising above us. Worth noting at this location were many cobble sized pieces of basalt, chert and mudstone scattered around the top of the cliffs. I would like to know the source rock for the basalt. My thoughts are that they are remnants of a conglomerate that is now eroded and gone. This location is at:
Easting 523850, Northing 4252378
We dubbed this point Da Vinci Lookout.
On the way to this point, we spent an hour hiking in the head of Candor Chasma. I noticed a large piece of conglomerate still cemented to the bottom of the stream bed that contained basalt cobbles giving some indication of the source rock for the basalt I've been seeing. After returning, plotting our route, and studying the map a bit more, we noticed a 4 wheel drive road on the map that will take us to the end of Candor Chasma. We're planning an EVA that will take us to that point and either ride the ATVs or hike up the canyon. We ought to be treated to stunning views of the stratigraphy of the canyon from the Summerville up through the Morrison.
During this EVA we made note of a road that intersects the Cactus Road at:
Easting 522002, Northing 4252819
...and heads to the north-west.
This road isn't on any of our maps and we plan a future EVA to map this route and see where it leads. It likely follows the high country above the Muddy Creek Canyon to the west.
