EVA-9
Rémon Annes Reporting
Around 11:00am Kurt, James and Rémon left the Hab on ATV's heading eastward. Purpose of this EVA was to re-open Cactus road and see what's out there.
One of the Earthly concessions we have to make with EVA's is to try and stay on existing roads or tracks as much as possible. The reason for this is to keep the surroundings as unspoilt as possible for the people and crews that follow us. Even though we had a crude map and a GPS unit, it was still difficult to find our way around. The seldom used tracks had mostly weathered away, leaving us guessing where to go.
We took a small detour towards the beginning of Candor Chasma to see if we could explore the dried up creek bed with ATV's. This proved to be impossible from the point we arrived at. We decided to explore this area another time.
Continuing down Cactus Road we ended up at a cliff site looking out over Muddy Creek. The vista we were treated to topped all we've seen in the past days, something we didn't think was possible anymore. Peering down a 60m vertical drop off we saw the creek below us make a sharp bend and continue to meander through the wide canyon. After spending some time soaking up the view it was time to leave again. Hesitantly we did.
Tired but elated, we returned to the Hab around 15:00pm.
EVA-10 Report
Ricardo Patrício Reporting
16.30 - 18.30, under the 50 mile mark. Georg and Ricardo took two ATVs to chart unnamed desert/sand 4WD parallel to Cactus Road. This road opened a fantastic sight before us, down below to Muddy Creek.
From there, we drove challanging trial roads, East of Candor Chasma, that guided us South to the North Pinto Hills and through to Lowell Highway, and back to the Hab.
