EVA Reports
Waldie & Klaus Reporting
EVA-1
James Waldie Reporting
EVA 1 was conducted by Remon, Mathias and James to search for locations to trial the Cliff Reconnaissance Vehicle (CRV) and to trial a GPS tracking software package by National Geographic based on USGS maps. The CRV is a wheeled device which is lowered down the side of a slope or cliff. Cameras mounted on the CRV record and transmit vision of the surface to the astronaut above.
Various locations were explored within line-of-sight of the hab to remain in comms and to reduce the travel time of future CRV experiments at discovered locations. Several slope and cliff sites were found to be close and accessible via ATV to the top of the slope/cliff, further aiding logistics of CRV experimentation.
The GPS tracking was found to work fine, plotting the EVA route on a map on our return. The radio PTT on helmet 1 failed, and was discovered to have completely snapped off at the switch shank as it passes through the helmet skin. A new square PTT switch was discovered in the spares drawer, and was successfully installed and rewired.
EVA-2
Kurt Klaus Reporting
EVA 2 was conducted by Georg and Kurt. This EVA was primarily a geologic field survey and systems test of navigation equipment, communication equipment, and how to conduct exploration in the space suits.
Based on field reports from Crew 36, we also began searching for concretions. We confirmed concretions behind the Hab and want to give at tip of the hat to Crew 36 for pointing them out to us. We collected samples of desert varnish, ventrifacts, agate, and chert during the EVA. We're using a trail map from Crew 22 to plan and plot our traverses as well as topography maps of the Utah quadrant we're exploring.
We hiked canyons and tested our traverse capabilities by climbing a steep incline located at N38 27.298' W110 47.513. We christened the hill Leonardo Rise.
