Science Report
John Christian Reporting
Astronomy: This is our last day in sim and the motor control board for the telescope has still not arrived. Because the telescope was not operational, we were unable to complete our astronomy science objectives.
Radio, Balloon, and Climber: APRS was used successfully again today during EVA20 (see EVA report). We were happy to see that information was not interrupted even while the EVA team was in a canyon about 3 km from the hab. The EVA crew's position was displayed in real time on the internet.
Human Factors: The crew is continuing to take their human factors tests in the evenings.
Biology: Nothing to report.
Geology: Nothing to report.
Navigation: Today's EVA team (see EVA 20 report) used a predetermined route to find their way to and from a set of waypoints about 3 km east of the hab that needed elevation data. Our mission support team in Atlanta coordinated with a local high school (Marietta High School) to produce a optimal route, using a combination of overhead imagery and topographical maps. The route they established worked exceedingly well and we had very little trouble despite quite difficult terrain. The waypoints of interest were in a large canyon that required us to navigate over a number of hills and around cliffs. The predetermined route made the EVA team's life a lot easier (especially because this was a very physically demanding EVA).
