Log Book for March 30, 2005
Engineering Report
Douglas Martin & Rebecca Fink Reporting

Gasoline Generator:
Filled at 0:00 MST, took 4 gal.
Filled at 8:00 MST, took 4 gal.
Filled at 16:00 MST, took 3.5 gal.
Oil changed at 16:00 MST
Gas Left: lots
Oil Left: 1 quart (Need more oil, the generator calls for straight SAE 30)
Comments: The generator failed last night at about 23:30. Kyle went to refuel it, but found that is was not out of fuel. However, it still would not start. I came out to meet him so two of us could diagnose the problem. We believe the problem was a combination of things. It seemed to have junk in the carburetor so we loosened the bulb under the float and strained the fuel. The sparkplug and the air filter were checked and seemed to be fine (the sparkplug fired normally with a good hot spark). The oil was down to half on the checkered part of the dipstick. Therefore, we refilled the generator with oil to ensure that it was not the oil sensor keeping it from running. It started with a large puff of smoke, but ran fine all night. However, there have been a couple of power spikes this morning. They seem to be caused by the generator momentarily losing power to drive the generator head. Then, as Jan and I suited up for an EVA the power died again. The oil was again filled from the half full mark to full, and the generator ran fine. The oil consumption seems to have greatly increased in the short time we have been here. This is probably a sign that the generator is in need of repair. The proper oil needs to be bought for it. It needs straight SAE 30 (we currently have SAE 5W30).

Propane Tank Level: At 16:00 MST: 58 %

Water:
Outside potable water tank: 1 %
Inside Tank Reading = 48 gallons
Water meter reading: 623.6 gallons

GreenHab: All the tanks are at nominal levels.

Grey-Water Level: Water level nominal.

HVAC: Nothing done.

Transportation: Nothing new to report.

Mars-Suits: Nothing new to report.

Computers & Network: Nothing new to report.

Data Logger: Nothing new to report.

Engineering Upgrades/Refit: The old diesel generator was moved from the generator stand to the Antarctic pile. We have heard that perhaps tomorrow morning around 10:00 we will get the new diesel generator. This comes just in time as our gas generator seems to be having issues.
