Log Book for March 25, 2005
Science Report
John Christian Reporting

Astronomy: Nothing to report.

Radio, Balloon, and Climber: The APRS system worked successfully today on two different EVAs - one short range EVA in the morning and one long range EVA in the afternoon. Again, the purpose was to gather information on the FRS and ham radio communication ranges and abilities. During both EVAs, the APRS system functioned wonderfully and transmitted the EVA team's coordinates back to the hab in real-time. The APRS log data is currently being analyzed. Once processed, the data will be overlaid with existing topographical maps and waypoint data.

The range of the hab ham radio station was significantly increased by mounting antennas on the roof of the hab (one for voice and one for APRS). A cookie sheet was used as a metal mounting surface. We recommend that a future crew look at permanently installing some ham radio antennas on the hab. This would allow crews with ham radio operators to already have some of the necessary infrastructure in place.

Human Factors: The crew is continuing to take their human factors tests in the evenings.

Biology: Nothing to report.

Geology: Nothing to report.

Navigation: The APRS system is working and has been successfully demonstrated. See the reports for EVA11 and EVA12.
