Log Book for March 22, 2005
Engineering Report
Douglas Martin & Rebecca Fink Reporting
Gasoline Generator:
Did not refill fuel till 7:30, and only used 2.5 gallons
Filled again at 12:00, and again only used 2-2.5 gallons
Changed oil at 18:00 MST, but did not refuel so we can see how long the generator will run.
Propane Tank Level: At 18:00 MST: 62% full
Water:
Thanks to DLJ Meter for our water meter and to Emily for getting it for us. The meter has worked great.
Outside potable water tank: 35.6 cm from base (approx. 200 gallons).
Inside Tank Reading = 36 gallons
Water meter reading: 153.7 gallons
GreenHab: Nothing new to report from the crew side; David Blersch continued working on it today. Thanks!
Grey-Water Level: The grey-water holding tank is mostly full.
HVAC: Nothing done.
Transportation: Nothing new to report.
Mars-Suits: Kyle did more work on the suits today.
- Helmet 4 - Checked the mic/speaker wiring and discovered that the lead wires extending from the case were soldered incorrectly. Kyle repaired this, leaving the helmet full operational.
- Backpack 4 - Finished building the pack. "Final" checkout presented problems with the power switch and/or the fuse holder. The fans would start and stop with the switch in either position spontaneously. The switch was removed, opened, cleaned, and yielded the same results. We also believe the fuse holder might have a loose contact. To return the suit to at least marginal operating condition, the switch was removed in lieu of bare wires that will be twisted under a wire nut for EVA's. The suspect fuse holder will be used until a replacement can be found.
Computers & Network: Nothing new to report.
Data Logger: Nothing new to report.
Engineering Upgrades/Refit: Began running the 12 volt line to new internal water pump, however there was not sufficient wire to run from the main 12v bus up to the switch. Paul and mission support was emailed, but there is no response from either on what they would like us to do. We decided to run the 12v line for the water pump with the 12 gage wire that was found in the hab. Since 12 gage is rated for more that the load or fuse for this line it should be sufficient. If needed the line can be rerun using a 10 gage line. The new water pump is installed and running well. It is much quieter that the old one.
