Log Book for March 9, 2005
Commander's Log
Mike Turner Reporting

As much as I would like to write a long and thoughtful account of the day's event, I cannot. There was so much work today, that it has forced me to get this report in late, and there is so much work to be done, that this has to be short. But I'll make it sweet.

We obtained our first few flight videos. We are going to analyze it tonight, and start fulfilling some of the scientific objectives that we set out in the geological & engineering analyses. I'm excited to do this. Doing the science for this project really drives me. This project was designed by my team and I, and has had eight months of thought & development behind it. To be here now finally analyzing the data and making conclusions makes me feel alive.

The crew is still working together beautifully. Everybody here has a heck of a spirit. They all work hard within their positions to get the goals accomplished, and they innovative beyond one's wildest dreams. Oh yeah, we laugh a lot, I find this an essential part of our mission.

We are going to fly tommorrow. Randy has analyzed the vehicle and says that if we land hard tommorrow, the structural member that holds the engine on may fracture and we may not be able to fly again. I estimate that in the next two days, that this will probably be the case. In the context of our mission, this is okay since the University of Illinois engineering team only has two more days here. Still it will be sad to see it go as we've spent so much time & money working on it. However, that is science, and the detrimental things that have happened have taught us lessons.

Overall, I think that the talent on this rotation is ensuring that we'll have tangible research results.

Ad Astra!
