Commander's Check-In
Hugh S. Gregory Reporting
The day started most unusually with my door respectfully being knocked upon at 06:05 and my Crew Scientist Dr. Francis announcing, "Commander, The Genny has died". A quick investigation by Anthony and Adam led to the discovery of a catastrophic failure of the engine of the "China Special". There was a 2 inch by 2 inch hole in the crankcase just above the starter motor. We were perfectly safe as the new engineering area is behind a 10 meter tall by 15 meter thick berm.
So I made the necessary notifications, including our families and we evacuated to our Earth Return Vehicle "Big Blue" and headed off for the pressure dome comfort of Lowell Ville and its fine interplanetary institute of hospitality, The Whispering Sands. We spent all day there with two of us snoring like demented dinosaurs for most of the morning and one of us took advantage of the hot shower available. When Don got back with our new genny we rocketed back out to the HAB and by 19:00 had power restored but only to the 5 kilowatt level.
Tonight's reports will include:
- Commanders Report
- Generator Failure Report
- Engineering Report
- HSO Report
Tomorrow is completely up in the air as we have not seen the weather forecast and are awaiting the tele-med con results after supper on our sick crewmember who is getting worse and not better.
BTW, just so you all know, by my own free will, without coersion or bribery (no chocolate cake around), I admit that am the person running the fever and still getting the job done. (cough, hack, ka-put). Amazing what Motrin can do to make one feel better. We've heard from our teammates who departed last weekend and one of them has reported sick also with the same symptoms.
So Adam is going to get up on his HSO high horse after dinner and order me into my sleeping bag. So no movie tonight. So after the tele-med conf, Adam will have his first command, abeit a short one until I am feeling better.
Warmest Regards! Hugh S. Gregory,
Mission Commander, Pisces One Expedition, MDRS Crew 35
