Commander's Check-In
Hugh S. Gregory Reporting
I heard it said by some that "Getting there is half the fun". Who ever said that must be an MDRS veteran. The Commander and Crew Scientist of the Pisces One Expedition, MDRS's Crew 35, finally made it to the HAB at 07:00 this morning after an 11 hour odyssey. Our adventure took us from Salt Lake City to the HAB via a spectacular six and half hour Moon lit night drive to Hanksville, one and half hours of trying to find the HAB road using, (unknown to us then) a faulty odometer and incorrect driving directions, followed by a 5km unscheduled two hour emergency "walk out to safety" EVA-0 performed at 04:00 in the morning after we bogged Big Blue in a creek bed for the 5th time. Details in the Commanders Report and the Science Report. Yes, we are off to a good start, probably as the first crew to ever perform an EVA before we even arrived. BTW, the walk into Hanksville by fading Moonlight is spectacular.
Our 2IC (XO) and Crew MD/HSO arrived 14 hours later mid evening and were welcomed by Commanders Gregory (Crew 35) and Graham (Crew 34) in full analogue Surface Activity Excursion Suites, guiding the PEV into it's docking slot and helping them transfer over the HAB safely. I think Felipe and Adam's jaws are still somewhere on the floor of the Pressurised Excursion Rover, Big Blue (the MDRS Truck).
The following reports on the first day of the Pisces One Expedition will sent up this evening.
1. Commanders Report
2. Engineering Report
3. Science Report
4. Journalist Report
Before arriving we had two training EVA's scheduled for Day 2 but given the HAB is still suffering the influences of the "Junkyard War's' refit crew, other events may transpire. It looks like Sim and Science will have to take a back seat to Safety as I think Paul Graham is going to need a hand from the Pisces One team to get unfinished but absolutely necessary refit chores completed.
Warmest Regards to all back on Earth from the first ever 5 person crew at MDRS, The Pisces One Expedition.
