Today: Normal chores in the GreenHab were performed.
All plants were watered. Currently the carrots are growing, and some radishes and alfalfa sprouts.
The new lemma and azola plants added to Tank 3 by Gus yesterday are doing well. Pictures will be taken every day to track their progress.
Water in tank #5 is running normally; tanks 2 and 4 were aerating.
Turned on recycle pump for 5 minutes at the final temperature reading interval to have water run through Peter's soil experiment setup. This water flows through the rock area and into Tank 1 to remove algae from the top of the tank. Close valve after use to avoid water siphoning back to Tank 4. (As Crew 27 set this up on their last day, we will have to see if it causes any problems. The main anticipated problem is that the small volume will make the water in the gravel bed prone to overheating, so turning on the recycle pump to flush it with colder water is important. Currently there are two water lettuces in there).
Open Issues:
- TST Float Switch
Status: Crew 27 found the silver float switch, engineering will install this tomorrow, per instructions.
- Tacking down loose wires:
Status: Will be done in the coming days.
- Yellow Laptop as part of HOBO logger system.
Status: The yellow laptop hab computer has some port malfunction which is preventing the HOBO download. During the HOBO testing, the baud rates were synchronized and correct port selected. The manual suggests that it might have been due to another program on the computer interfering with the Boxcar 4.3 program; Gus will evaluate it in the coming days.
- Treatment system appears not to be removing nitrate
Status: We are currently evaluating Crew 27's assessment and proposed action for this issue (see report of 4/10)
- Trickling Filter Covers:
Status: Based on Crew 27's suggestion, in the coming days, we will move green screen back temporarily with poles. Then remove black covers. Put the black trash bag covers over a frame (either pipes or wood), to lift the covers by 1-3" above the top of the tanks.
- Intermediate Plant screen for Tank #4:
Status: Based on Crew 27's suggestion, in the coming days, we will put in a vertical screen to prevent plants from floating underneath the back cover. Create a horizontal wood bar to bridge the width of the tank. Then tack a screen to the board and have it weighted to fall below the water surface. Then tack a black trash bag to the board and have it drop over the back of the tank.
