Log Book for March 24, 2004
EVA-14 Report
Jamon Neilson Reporting

Duration: 12:45 to 3:45 (3 hour, 0 minutes)

Participants: Jamon Neilson, Heather Hava, Susmita Mohanty

Route: Hab to Way Point 13 (Lithe Canyon)

Equipment: Camera, Maps, Rock Hammer, GPS, Sampling Kit

Objective: Today we made use of the MDRS truck and had our first excursion using it as a pressurized rover. We decided that we would look at some previous way points from other crew rotations, of particular interest was finding petrified trees, and fossils. Among the MDRS library we found a beginners guide to geology and fossils. We collected samples and have been spending the evening trying to identify them. Being a novice geologist I found it fascinating trying to identify the various kinds of rocks and petrified wood that we collected. I am truly enjoying my experience here at MDRS. As a recommendation I think having a field guide to being a Martianaut would be valuable tool. So I've decide to start writting a simple manual on techniques for planetary explorations. Our primary focus as a crew has been to document our experiences and methodologies on EVAs in a concise format.

Weather: Stormy Weather, and Moderate winds

Maximum distance traveled from Hab: 5.12 km

Lessoned Learned:
  1. EVA mission planning
  2. Documenting Protocols on EVAs
  3. Endurance hike in suits
  4. Identifying different rocks, and Fossils
