Log Book for March 11, 2004
General Engineering Report
Jason Schwier Reporting
Generators:
Lil Genny:
Time: 0745
Started with no difficulty. Oil full, 20W-50. Gasoline at 1/2 tank.
China Special:
The oil was changed today. Next Oil Change: 13 March, 1230
Time: 0740
Diesel: 1/8 tank
Oil: F, 20W-50
Volts: 220 V
Hours: 95.4
Follow-up Checks at 1330, 1730, 2330 to refuel for night
Propane:
Time: 0740
Furnace Tank: 85%
Water:
Time: 1845
Inside: 19 gal
Outside High: 54 cm
Outside Low: 48 cm
Leak Bucket: 2.2 buckets to toilet supply tank (TST)
Water Used previous day: 26 gal
Yesterday, we performed a water usage experiment to determine why so much water was used on 9 March. Over a span of three hours, the water level dropped by two gallons, due to minor usage for dishes and hand washing. This does not provide an explanation to the mystery. There is a possibility that a leak exists that is undocumented. Current known leaks are the shower and the lab sink. All leaked water is captured and dumped in the TST.
According to the MDRS manual, the average amount of water used per crewmember is 4 gallons per day. We believe that this baseline number may be too low for proper GreenHab operation. For the rotation, Crew 25 has attempted to use more water than normal (within limits) to get the GreenHab water levels into the nominal range. In knowing this, we believe that 5-6 gallons per person per day should be the baseline to keep the GreenHab operational and flowing.
ATVs:
#1 - Oil ok. Gasoline at 1/2 tank. Started ok.
#2 - Oil a little low, 20W-50 added. Gasoline at 1/2 tank. Started ok.
#3 - Oil a little low, 20W-50 added. Gasoline at 1/2 tank. Started ok.
The bracket holding the battery in place in ATV #2 has been missing since the beginning of the mission. It has not been a problem thus far, but we are attempting to find a solution. The bolt needed for the bracket is 1/4"-28, 1-inch long.
GreenHab:
Time: 1220
Humidity: 60%
Internal Temperature: 100 F
External Temperature: 92 F
Today, GreenHab engineers informed the crew that enough water has been used to allow flow from the GreenHab into the TST. This marks the first time this rotation that the GreenHab has enough inflow to return some grey water for use in the Hab. The crew will be slowly returning to normal water usage until we can determine that the GreenHab is definitely receiving enough water to operate.
Hab: Nothing to report today.
Suits: Amy is repairing the tear in suit three.
Notes: For the first three days of operation, oil was changed daily in the China Special. We have shifted now to changing the oil every two days. Documentation and instructions should be provided to Crew 26 about the schedule for oil changes, as changing the oil every two days for a long period of time creates a significant amount of waste oil.
