Commander's Log
Kevin Sloan Reporting
Today was a much more relaxed day for the crew, as everyone has been resting up for a hard working last stretch here at MDRS. In lieu of the normal RST directed science EVAs, the crew ran an emergency simulation today. Amy, Dennis and Kevin ventured south of the Hab about 3 kilometers, where Amy went down with a simulated lower leg fracture. Kevin and Dennis carried her 35 meters to a shaded overhand, where Dennis stayed with her. Kevin sprinted back to one of the ATVs on the road a couple of hundred meters away, and quickly made his way back to the Hab. Once he was able to establish radio contact with the Hab, Daniel began to get ready, and met Kevin outside. The two hopped in to the PEV, and rather awkwardly drove back to attend to Amy.
Conducting the entire rescue mission in full simulation turned out to be a much greater challenge than anticipated. The most difficult aspect was figuring out how to carry someone in a space suit. Although a lot of hard work, the EVA was quite an experience.
The rest of the day was spent working on smaller projects, and otherwise resting. Jason was able to get the primary microcontroller for the PSUMS rover up and running. After some wiring work by Kevin tomorrow, the rover should be up and running.
Tomorrow the crew will conduct another RST directed EVA. The RST directed EVAs are mostly complete, and have been a tremendous learning experience for both the crew and the RST. The work done during this rotation will go a long way towards establishing set criteria for tele-science operations in the future.
Through the rest of this week, while working on the PSUMS rover, the crew will finish up some small engineering tasks around the Hab. Jason and Amy will also be working on tutorial videos to assist with the crew changeovers. Wednesday also marks Ryan's last day at MDRS, as he has to leave early Thursday to be wined and dined by the European Space Agency.
