Log Book for March 6, 2004
Commander's Check-In
Kevin Sloan Reporting

Crew Status: All 6 crew members are in good condition. A couple of the crew members are somewhat sore from construction of the shelter for the diesel generator.

Daily Recap: Today was finally diesel day (D-Day). Around 12:30 Don Foutz arrived with the correct power adapter for the diesel generator, and over the course of the next hour the adapter was fitted to the existing wiring. During the morning the crew also finished building the shelter for the diesel generator. This ended up being a large amount of labor, thanks to the subsurface rock. While the generator was brought online, Amy, Daniel and Jason were out on EVA 9, completing the third geology RST mission. Late in the afternoon, and running to dusk, Dennis, Kevin and Ryan completed EVA 10, which was the fourth biology EVA. Tired from a very long day, the crew is ready for dinner, and eventually report writing.

Tomorrow's Plan: Tomorrow will be a much easier day, possible with an easier EVA in the plans. Also, with the largest re-engineering task behind the crew, work on other various engineering tasks, including the PSUMS rover, will begin to finally pick up.

Daily Reports: Tonight's reports will be somewhat late, as the crew is drained from a very long, but very productive day. The first four reports will be filed by 21:30; however the last three may not be submitted until after 23:00.

  5. EVA Reports -- Daniel Hegeman/Kevin Sloan
  6. Geology Report -- Amy Blank
  7. Biology Report -- Ryan Kobrick
Support Requested: The crew would like to know when the scheduled pick-up date for the propane tanks will be. As soon as those are gone, a final home can be built for the diesel generator, behind the rock wall.

Addendum (20:30): Looks like the crew got optimistic about the diesel generator too soon. At 20:30, a brown out occurred in the Hab, and the diesel generator was heard spitting, and otherwise failing to run normally. After running outside while turning everything off along the way, the crew observed sparks flying out of the exhaust of the diesel. The exhaust was also glowing red hot. The generator was not overloaded, nor was it low on fuel or oil. The cause of this problem is still unknown. Lil' Genny has been called upon for the remainder of the night. In the morning the crew will investigate the problem more thoroughly with the help of sunlight, and hopefully Don Foutz. At this point there is little confidence in the ability of the new diesel generator to replace the Generac, or even Lil' Genny.
