Commander's Log
Kevin Sloan Reporting

After arriving at the Whispering Sands motel in Hanksville at 1:00 Sunday, the crew (with the exception of Dennis Creamer, who would arrive later Sunday) was able to make a quick turnaround, leaving for the Hab at 6:45. Having misinterpreted the directions, the crew turned onto the wrong dirt road, and quickly found themselves in a dried up creek bed. There were two vehicles; one car and one minivan that Crew 24 would return to Salt Lake City. The crew and the sand had difference of opinions about the minivan: the crew wanted the minivan to return to the road; the sand disagreed. An early morning recruitment of Don Foutz helped remedy that situation, and the entire crew was able to make it to the Hab by 9:00.

Upon arrival at the Hab, Crew 24 began an accelerated briefing of Crew 25. The transition covered health and safety procedures, an overview of all engineering systems, the GreenHab, the spacesuits and the ATVs. Crew 24 left for Salt Lake City by 12:00.

At 13:00 Kevin departed the Hab to drive to Grand Junction, CO to pick up Crew 25's 6th member, Dennis Creamer. While in Grand Junction, they stopped at the store to pick up a few extra supplies that were needed, including black ink cartridges for the Hab printer. Kevin and Dennis arrived back at the Hab at 20:00.

During the afternoon, Amy, Daniel, Jason and Ryan continued settling in, and also organized all of the food in the Hab. They also took care of all engineering and GreenHab tasks for the day. Their afternoon ended with a short one hour EVA, scouting some of the local area by foot.

Tonight's round of report writing began a little late, made for a rushed evening. After a much needed dinner, the crew discussed major objectives for the two week rotation. These objectives are discussed in a separate report.

Tomorrow will include one of the shorter RST requested EVA missions, and will also include more exploration of the area and navigation training. A compass was purchased today to supplement the lone GPS unit available. Kevin will begin investigating work that needs to be done to the GreenHab, possibly continuing the investigation during a late afternoon EVA, depending on the first EVA of the day.

And with that, Crew 25 is going to get some much needed sleep.
