Commander's Log
Digby Tarvin Reporting
Yesterday was a long day for the crew, many leaving home at a very early hour to arrive at Salt Lake City where we were to meet and then proceed to MDRS as a crew.
The last of the crew arrived at SLC just after 10:00AM, and because of a shortage of large sized rental vehicles (probably the result of it being a long weekend and good weather for skiing) we had to hire two mid sized cars and proceed as a convoy. After stopping to collect all the needed supplies for the two weeks, the vehicles were only just large enough.
The shopping was completed at 14:00 and the journey to Hanksville was completed in just over four hours. We arrived at MDRS at about 18:30.
After a pleasant dinner of spaghetti bolognese with the members of Crew 23, we were treated to the traditional lightning course on Hab operation and maintenance. Both crews were finally in bed by about 1:00AM.
Due to the long day and late night yesterday I was going to allow my crew to sleep in till 9:00AM, but everyone was up by 8:00AM without any prompting, in time to see the last members of crew 23 departing.
The first duty of the day was the moving of our personal equipment into the newly vacated staterooms to make some space, and gather in the wardroom for our first morning meeting. This was followed by breakfast, and then running through the Hab systems to see what was working, and see what we could remember from last night. We also inventoried the food items in the kitchen and sorted the new and existing items into the cupboards.
We spent some time troubleshooting a problem with the pumping of water into the storage tanks above the crew state rooms, investigating a problem with ATV3, which Crew 23 had indicated to us had been malfunctioning, and also investigating the problem with the pumping of grey water into the GreenHab. More details on these items can be found in the engineering and GreenHab reports.
We finished the day with some suit familiarization and a pedestrian EVA which included about two hours of crew members selecting and fine tuning their suits and accessories, and a testing walk to a nearby feature (4261.38N 518.62E UTM) which had us back at the Hab at 18:52, just in time to start on our reports.
