Commander's Check-In
Tony Muscatello Reporting
- Time Returned:
There was no EVA today because of the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster. I did not feel it would be appropriate or even safe to conduct an EVA with such a serious distraction. Oleg took the rover to Salt Lake City at 11am to shop and drop it off with Crew 13. Kevin left for Phoenix this morning at 9am to be with his father who had had surgery last night. Crew 13 was to arrive at SLC airport at 5:30pm. I estimate they will get here at 11pm or later. We put temporary signs for them at the intersection of Highway 24 and Cow Dung Road and the turnoff to the Hab to help them find their way in the dark.
- Crew Physical Status:
Crew 12 is devastated by the loss of Columbia and its crew of seven brave astronauts. We have pressed on to complete our duties which include training Crew 13.
- Brief Narrative of Field Mission Results:
There was no EVA, but we did go on a little walk near the Hab. We found it much easier to find small dinosaur fossils, desert rose, petrified wood, and other rock specimens with our naked eyes than peering through the scratched and scarred space suit helmets.
- Plans for Tomorrow:
Train Crew 13 and depart the MDRS. Tara, Susie, and Arno will be driven to SLC by a member of Crew 13 starting at 10 am. Tony will stay until noon to complete training of Crew 13 and turn over the station. If the sky is clear enough, Arno will rise very early and attempt telescopic observations of Mars. Visual observations were unsuccessful this morning because of difficulty with manual focusing of the telescope.
- Report Transmission Schedule:
All reports will be in by 10 pm MST. Astronomy reports will be filed the next day. As usual, reports will be transmitted as they become available. There will be no EVA report. The Geology Report will be a summary of the geology of the areas surrounding the Hab.
Maintenance: All major systems are in good shape.
EVA Narrative/Data/Interpretations: On the walk, many specimens of dinosaur fossil fragments, desert rose (quartz), petrified wood, and other intriguing rocks were collected. Improvement of the helmet dome visibility is highly desirable. EVAs in the very near vicinity of the Hab are very useful.
Inventory: Food supplies remain adequate. Oleg took the shopping list for Crew 13. The main water tank is 100% full after refilling by Larry Ekker. LP gas supplies are near full. We continue to conserve power where possible, turning the thermostat down to 60 F at night, turning off unnecessary lights, and turning on the water heater only when needed.
Miscellaneous: Crew 12 suspended the sim this morning because of the Columbia disaster. We continue necessary operations to maintain the Hab and will train the new crew tomorrow morning.
